Battlefield 3 AK-74M Overview

Magazine: 30 rounds
Rate of Fire: 650 RPM
Faction: Spetsnaz
Fire Modes: Automatic (default) and Semi-Automatic. Note: In the beta test, it is also the tooltip says that it is able to also be set to burst mode, but players are only able to flip between automatic and semi-automatic. This could be an error in that burst mode is not available or it could be an error in that the tooltip incorrectly is showing burst mode as an option.

The AK-74M is one of the default Assault Kit guns and is only available to Spetsnaz players. This particular Assault Rifle is fairly generic and has few strengths and few weaknesses. If you go against a player in long-ranged combat, a Sniper Rifle is superior, and if you go against a player in short-ranged combat, a submachine gun or shotgun is superior.

Of course, being a better player or getting the surprise on your opponent can always shift the tides of battle, as can equiping specific weapon attachments to outfit this gun.

Battlefield 3 AK-74M vs M16A3

Compared to the M16A3, the AK-74M has a slightly slower fire rate but slightly higher bullet damage. This means that it is slightly better at mid-long ranged combat, whereas the M16A3 is better at short-ranged combat.

Think about what this means. When you are using the AK-74M, all other new Assault Kit users on the other team will be likely using the M16A3, which means you have a slight advantage in mid-long ranged combat.

BF3 AK-74M Strategy & Attachments Guide

Since you will be likely up against a lot of M16A3s, the Engineer's submachine guns are superior in short-ranged combat, and the Support's light machine guns just are not all that accurate from any mid-long ranged distance, and you find yourself in a situation where the AK-74M is the superior mid-ranged gun on the map.

This means that you can really make this gun a lot more effective by adding on appropriate attachments which augment your mid-ranged strengths.

The first thing you want to do is get a better sight so you can get better shots off at mid-ranged players. For this, the early PSO-1 (4x magnification) scope works just fine. You can always change to a different scope as you get to a higher level.

Next up, you need to improve your long-range accuracy since this gun tends to be a little inaccurate. For this, you should equip the Heavy Barrel. Since the Heavy Barrel increases vertical climb, you need to reduce horizontal climb so you have less to think about when readjusting your gun. A Foregrip makes a good third attachment for this purpose.

The last step is to turn your gun onto single-shot mode. Do this by pushing the down button on the directional pad on your controller. When you fire at players, you can fire a shot off at a rate of about 1 shot per quarter second (4 per second).

By adding in this brief pause, the gun is able to fall back into the position you shot it from. In other words, when you shoot the gun, there is vertical climb thanks to the Heavy Barrel, but it will go right back to the starting position if you wait a fraction of a second. If you shoot the gun with a tap-tap-tap instead of just holding down the trigger on automatic mode, it becomes extremely accurate, even from long distances.

You will find that 1-3 shots is enough to take out an enemy player, depending on how close you are, and you can easily squeeze in 3 shots within a second, so it is extremely accurate. Before you shoot the enemy, be sure to mark them in case they get away so players closer up can take them down.

Remember that this build will typically make you a superior class at mid-ranged combat than any other class in the game. Stay away from shooting from too far, as you will be weak against Snipers. Short-ranged combat is always fine if you sneak up on the opponent and get the jump. Do not go head-on into a room with this gun set up because you are weak against a lot of classes in this regard.

Battlefield 3 AK-74M Guide Conclusion

You now have a good plan for using the Battlefield 3 AK-74M in combat. By augmenting the guns range, reducing its kickback, and turning it into a mid-long ranged weapon, you play into the weapon's strengths rather than trying to overcome its inevitable weaknesses (head-on short-ranged combat and very long-ranged sniping).
