Battlefield 3 AKS-74u Overview

Magazine: 30 rounds
Rate of Fire: 650 RPM
Factions: Russians / Spetsnaz

The AKS-74u is one of the starting weapons for the Engineer. It is an all-around decent carbine (sub-machine guns are called Carbines in Battlefield 3, if only to differentiate from other titles as in real life usually the word Carbine and Assault Rifle are considered more alike than Assault Rifles and submachine guns) and has stand-out strengths or weaknesses.

Weaknesses of the AKS-74u

Although this gun is billed as being good at mid-ranged combat, but that is a bit of a stretch in my opinion. I find it to be a bit inaccurate from any more than a short distance apart- an Assault Rifle like the AK-74M is simply more powerful and accurate from moderate distances.

As a result, this gun really is best for short-range combat. If you are more than 20 or 30 yards from your opponent, it's going to be hard to take down a moving target with a gun like this unless they are running in a straight line away from you.

Strengths of the AKS-74u

One good thing about this weapon is it is one of the best starting ranges at short-ranged combat. Its low kickback allows you to take down enemy players with relative easy that are close to you. It is most effective at a range just outside of shotgun range.

Best Attachments for the AKS-74u

When thinking about the AKS-74u, this gun is really just to protect yourself from those who get too close to you or those who you manage to sneak up on. Your overall goal as an Engineer is to support your team through launching Rockets, repairing and controlling machinery, and through taking down enemy-controlled machines.

As a result, you want to outfit the AKS-74u either for stealth or for closed-ranged combat. If you want to remain hidden, the Suppressor is a good choice. I always think that the Suppressor is best used on Carbines since if you are actually firing one you are likely to be deep in enemy territory.

If you are not into the Cloak and Dagger approach, another good attachment is the Laser Sight or Tactical Light. Being able to improve your aim from the hip (Laser Sight) or blind nearby enemies (Tactical Light) is always a good choice.

For optics, I prefer the Red Dot Sight or a detector as compared to a scope. The gun really is not all that accurate or powerful from a range where a scope would come in handy, so using optics which offer magnification is not all that useful.

Battlefield 3 AKS-74u Conclusion

Don't try to turn your AKS-74u into an Assault Rifle, because it really is not one. Equip it for short-range combat and stick to the role of the Engineer and you will fare a lot better off.

A lot of beginners try to play the Engineer like the Assault Kit - don't forget your overall role in the game. If you want to be an Assault player with explosives, pick the Assault Kit and use the M320 - this will give you an Assault Rifle with Frag Grenades.
