AK-74M Overview

The AK-74M is one of the starting Battlefield 3 Weapons for players using the Assault kit. It is available to Spetsnaz players only. It is an all-around okay weapon which has no particular strengths and no particular weak points.

I will say that without any attachments, this and the M16A3 are probably the worst starting guns available for players as they are not really good for anything. Once you get a decent scope, the heavy barrel, and a foregrip, this gun is a solid mid-long ranged gun. Alternatively, you can use a Laser Sight and Firegrip or Extended Mag in order to turn this gun into a decent short to mid-ranged gun.

Note that when you join a quickmatch game, you end up getting randomly assigned to Spetsnaz (Russia) or USMC (USA). Only Spetsnaz players can use this gun, and players switch faction with each game, meaning that you can only use this weapon half the time.

M16A3 - USMC/USA Only

Firing Modes: Automatic and Semiautomatic. Note: In the beta, this gun's tooltip states it is also capable of a burst fire mode, but that is currently inaccessible.
Full Article: Battlefield 3 M16A3 Guide

The M16A3 is one of the starting Battlefield 3 Assault weapons. You can only use this gun when you are playing as the USMC. This gun is an overall balanced gun and is decent at short and mid-ranged combat. It can also provide decent suppression fire at long-range, but it is hard to get long-distance kills with this gun.

For an Assault Rifle, the M16A3 has a pretty big kickback when fired. Although it can be fired as an automatic, if you fire more than a few shots at once, your aim will be completely lost. You can only fire this as an automatic accurately when shooting from the hip, even with the Foregrip attachment. Semi-Automatic mode works best here for any mid or long-ranged attacks (or burst fire if they implement it).

Since you can only use the M16A3 when playing as the USMC, note that you can typically only use this in half your games. In Quick Match games, players usually switch factions with every game, so you will have to alternate between this and the AK-74M (at least until you unlock more Battlefield 3 Assault weapons).

M416

Ammo: 30 rounds
Rate of Fire: 750 RPM
Firing Modes: Automatic and Semi-Automatic
Full Article: Battlefield 3 M416 Guide

The M416 is an automatic Assault Rifle which is quite accurate from a distance and is my personal favorite early Assault Kit guns. Its claim to fame is an extremely low kickback compared to other Assault Rifles. This makes it very strong at shooting from the hip compared to the earlier AK-74M or M16A3. It is quite strong at mid-range, but I find it to be a bit too inaccurate at long range. A single well-aimed bullet from a Sniper Rifle will do far more damage with far less effort.
