Battlefield 3 M16A3 Guide
In this Battlefield 3 M16A3 guide, we will not only be going over
with you the basics behind this Assault Kit starting weapon but also discussing how it varies from its AK-47M
counterpart and what attachments you can use to maximize the effectiveness of this gun.
Battlefield 3 M16A3 Overview
Magazine: 30 rounds
Rate of Fire: 800 RPM
Faction: USMC
Fire Modes: Automatic (default) and Semi-Automatic. Note: For some reason in the beta test,
the tooltip shows that it can be set to burst mode, but the game does not actually let you switch to it. Not sure
if the bug is in the tooltip or the bug being not able to switch to burst.
Out of all the starter weapons, the classic M16A3 is actually in my opinion one of the weakest. It is mildly
weaker in single-shot combat than the AK-74M in long-ranged combat (due to the M16A3 having a faster firing rate
with mildly less effective shots) and and is certainly a lot worse at firing multiple bullets at once than the
M416, which has far less recoil.

I recommend using the M16A3 simply because you have to until you get move on to other weapons within the Assault
Kit, as this is definitely one of the worst weapons you will encounter in Battlefield 3.
Battlefield 3 M16A3 vs AK74-M
As mentioned above, the M16A3 is fires faster than the AK-74M, but as a result seems slightly less effective on
a bullet-by-bullet comparison. In close-quarters combat, this gives the M16A3 an advantage, as it makes this gun
more effective at firing from the hip.
On the other hand, when you turn off automatic fire, the AK-74M seems to be better, albeit slightly, then the
M16A3.
BF3 M16A3 Strategy & Attachments Guide
As mentioned above, I really don't like the M16A3. It feels like one of the worst guns I have used in
Battlefield 3. Without a doubt, the M416 is much better at firing multiple bullets in a burst. The kick back is so
much less with that weapon that you can actually fire 5 shots in a row (or more) accurately from a decent distance.
The M16A3 has much more kickback as a comparison.
You can switch the M16A3 into semi-automatic mode by pressing down on the directional pad. By firing 1 bullet at
a time, you really do reduce the kickback significantly. You can put on a heavy barrel to increase your accuracy.
However, you will not reliably take down players from a far distance in 1 or 2 shots with the M16A3, whereas I feel
like the AK-74M is slightly better suited for the task. Either way I do not like either gun too much from a very
far distance, as the bullets just don't seem to be accurate enough.
For long-distance combat, the M416 actually fires off enough bullets with minimal kickback to where you can take
down players at range reliably. If you are going to fight in short-range combat, I would much rather use a
submachine gun or a shotgun than the M16A3.
If you want to be effective with the M16A3, you have to be a master of deciding when it is best to shoot at a
player from range, sneak up on them, or simply mark them and move on to the next target. Players can definitely be
effective with this gun, but it is not newbie friendly, which is strange for a starter weapon. I think the M416 is
a much better starter weapon, as it is much easier to master 1 aspect of the game at once (close combat, mid range,
long range, etc) then it is to try to tackle everything at once.
Battlefield 3 M16A3 Guide Conclusion
Although the M16A3 is a starter weapon, it is one of the hardest to use appropriately. Since it is decent at all
aspects of the game but strong at none, you will always run into counters: strong versus Recon but weak versus
Engineers at close range, Strong versus Engineers but weak versus Snipers at long range.
You need to figure out what your enemy's class is and engage them in the most advantageous way if you want to
reliably win fights when using the M16A3.
